Bookmarked
the high school book group
2013-2014
The library high school book group was created in August of 2007 as a venue for students to have an opportunity to sit and chat about books. The group meets every Monday at lunch in the library. Bookmarked has also been instrumental in helping the librarian with author visits, fund raising, Teen Read Week and Teen Tech Week.
For 2010-2014, the students are participating in YALSA's YA Galley Program to select the nominated books for Teen's Top Ten. YALSA is the Young Adult Library Services Association, a division of the American Library Association. The 2013 Teen's Top Ten books have been announced. Open here for a list of the winning titles.
Bookmarked was asked by School Library Journal to contribute reviews of books for its bi-monthly newsletter, SLJ Teen. This stint began in June of 2012 and ended December 2013. The editors at School Library Journal have raved about the students' book reviews. Open here, to read the reviews from each edition of SLJ Teen.

On February 21st, four members of Bookmarked went on a field trip with Ms. Kahn to attend the Dark Days Tour at Octavia Books. Five authors visited the bookstore for this event: Veronica Rossi, Sophie Jordan, Tahereh Mafi, Kiersten White, and Claudia Gray (seen pictured on the right in that order). The president of Bookmarked, Paris Evans, was the moderator for the evening. To see more pictures and read all about this amazing event, please visit the librarian's blog here.
During Bookmarked's weekly meetings, we usually chit chat among ourselves. On February 10th, we had a special guest join our discussion via Skype. Deb Caletti is the author of ten books for young adults with all of them winners. The students loved listening to her describe her love of reading which began at an early age and how she entered the writing business. She was delightful, and her charm was evident even through the computer.
Todd Mitchell, the author of Backwards, skyped with Bookmarked on Monday, November 18th.Only a handful of students had a chance to read the book before the event. The others were very conscious about not wanting to hear spoilers because they wanted to read the book, too. Todd had lots to say about writing and books and the need for YA fiction that promotes suicide prevention (a theme in Backwards). The kids loved hearing his ideas.
On September 11, 2013, Bookmarked members visited virtually with Walter Dean Myers, the National Ambassador for Young People's Literature. He talked for 45 minutes with the students. His sense of humor really came through the screen and touched the students. It was a great visit and over 30 students attended.
